Little Boy’s Dream

Little Boy's Dream

The lid displayed clouds of
steam streaming over
the dark green engine
with pistons pumping
the box hidden behind the closed
doors of anticipation.

Yards of track laid out in
a planned figure of eight
each circuit a journey
of a boy searching for his
destination to be a man.

The Flying Scotsman in miniature
form pulling his team
of smartly dressed carriages
but no steam could hide
the tears of denial
in a tunnel of endless darkness.

A doll
with a pretty baby face
lay discarded beside
the empty tree amid brightly coloured
wrappings of disappointment
and empty desires.

Amid the laughter of men
consumed by the memories of railways
they knew when wearing short trousers
Santa did not answer a little boy’s dream.

About Jez Farmer

I am a freelance writer and poet and started writing after raising my two boys as a way of discovering just who Jez is. That is still very much an on-going project but the journey so far has introduced me to many wonderful friends and fellow writers through an ever growing love of poetry.
