Family Feast by Niko Pirosmani Family Feast by Niko Pirosmani

Artist: Niko Pirosmani (1862 – 1918)

Nationality: Georgian

Completion Date: 1907

Style: Primitivism

Genre: Genre painting

Media: Oil on oilcloth

Location: Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow

Pirosmani did not have much of a family life. At the age of six, his older brother died, followed by both of his parents two years later. His two sisters went to live with other relatives, leaving the young boy alone. He was taken in by his father’s employer and his wife, who had six children. Although Pirosmani lived with the family for over 15 years, he was little more than a family pet, taking care of the younger children, and given very little guidance. Pirosmani’s childlike naiveté in painting may have had more to do with the lack of care he received while growing up than his lack of a formal education in painting.

About Jez Farmer

I am a freelance writer and poet and started writing after raising my two boys as a way of discovering just who Jez is. That is still very much an on-going project but the journey so far has introduced me to many wonderful friends and fellow writers through an ever growing love of poetry.
