Hard Labour

Corn Woman’s Task by Sandi J. Ludescher

Her fingers knead a gentle touch

As flour and yeast swiftly combine
Then her grip becomes rougher clutch

Pushing air down beyond the line

Each push echoes with hidden sound

The heel of her hands deep and firm
Alternating the pace to pound

Enticing growth from the wheat germ

Spreading the dough then rolling flat

Pulling it together again
Throwing it down, making it splat

And stretching out the rising chain

A pause, a time to breathe and rise

Before the final shape of bread
The hot baking and then the prize

A thick slice with a honeyed spread.

About Jez Farmer

I am a freelance writer and poet and started writing after raising my two boys as a way of discovering just who Jez is. That is still very much an on-going project but the journey so far has introduced me to many wonderful friends and fellow writers through an ever growing love of poetry.
